Just Right Books

When learning to read, it’s important to pick books that are just right for your reader.  We follow the 5 Finger Rule to help us find just right books.

Here is how the 5 Finger Rule works!

First- Open the book to any page

Next- Read the words on the page and for each word your child does not know, hold up 1 finger.

Last- When finished reading the page, count how many fingers are up and use the chart below to figure out the just right book for your child!!

0 to 1 fingers up- Too Easy!

2 fingers us - Perfect Choice!

3 to 4 fingers up - Give it a Try!

5 or more fingers up - Too Hard!

If a book turns out to be too easy, use it to ask your child comprehension questions about the story allowing them to recall what happened in the book.  Use this book as a guide to themes your child enjoys and look for other books that may be more challenging with the same theme.

If a book turns out to be too hard, read it together and discuss it with your child as you are reading.  Allow your child to read some of the words they recognize.  You can also find a similar themed book that is less challenging for your child to read.

If you ever have questions on just right books, let me know and I’d be happy to make some suggestions for your child.
