Practice at Home!
  • Practice clapping syllables. How many things around the house are one syllable? Two? Can you find something 3 syllables long?

  • Practice spelling 1 syllable words (for now!) by tapping each sound.
    • For example: cup. Pound and say cup. Then use your non-dominant hand to tap! (Left hand- thumb to pinky, ring, middle. Right hand- thumb to pointer, middle, ring.) Example: cup /c/ /u/ /p/ starting left to right. Then pound cup again. Then spell. (The kids will know how to do this!)

  • Practice blending 1 syllable words (for now!)
    • You say 3 sounds (can be nonsense words) that are CVC, including learned digraphs. You say /l/ /e/ /t/ and your child blends let. /ch/ /i/ /p/- chip. *Do not do this for "sight words" or words that don't follow sound patterns*

  • Have students write sight words or words with practiced sounds on index cards:
    • Use word cards/sight word cards to play games!
      • Examples: Flip a card and say the word or sound before picking a moving card for CandyLand, before putting a piece for ConnectFour, picking a JENGA piece
    • Have your child write sight words on two index cards.
      • Now you can play Go Fish, Memory, War, UNO etc as if they are a deck of cards!

  • Use Bananagram or Scrabble tiles to spell sight words or practice words! Make it into any kind of challenge!
