Settle in September

Language Arts

This year in Language Arts we will use the reading program, Making Meaning, which focuses on reading, comprehension, and vocabulary.  We will also be working with another program called Becoming a Writer to learn how to write/draw to express our knowledge.  Please note all children will be encouraged to write using inventive spelling.

We will begin our year working with letter recognition, sounds, and letter formation.  We will continue working with phonics, and start blending letter sounds to make words.  All children by the end of Kindergarten must be able to identify all letters (upper and lower case) and their sounds, as well as being able to identify 50 of 96 sight words (also known as popcorn words).  Many will be reading, some emergent but all should understand that letters make words and words make sentences.

Mathematics

In Math we will start with the topic "One to Five" and move on to "Comparing and Ordering Numbers 0 to 5".  Students will learn that numbers are used for different purposes, and numbers can be classified and represented in different ways.  We will also learn the correct formation for the numbers zero through ten.  Please practice writing numbers at home.

Social Studies

During the month of September, the children will learn about themselves, their classmates, and their school.  Each week we have "Getting-to-Know You" where we are able to learn about our classmates.

Your child will begin to recognize and print his/ her name correctly, cut with scissors, recognize colors and color words, distinguish left and right, learn his/ her phone number, birthday, and address, distinguish paths, and recognize the letters of the alphabet.
